Glendalough

On Saturday morning 10th October, a group of 13 Marists arrived in Glandalough, Co. Wicklow for a day of reflection. Nine teachers from the three Marist schools, Chanel College, Coolock, CUS, Leeson St. and St Mary's College, Dundalk were welcomed by Kevin Jennings, the director of the MEA, Marist Fathers, Jimmy McElroy SM, Martin McAnaney SM, convenors of the day, and Fr John O'Gara SM. Our theme for the day was the road to Emmaus. We listened to the words of the scripture read to us by Fr John, which focused on our journey for the day ahead.

Then, Kevin, familiar with the paths and terrain of Glendalough, led us on our way. Just as Emmaus was a unique experience, so too was our walk. Everyone partnered up and listened and shared as we walked on this beautiful morning. Stories shortened the journey. We remembered the scripture read to us earlier in the day: 'They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them, but they were kept from recognising him.' It was a pleasant thought, surrounded by the beauty of creation, in pleasant company.

Then a picnic enjoyed by all was followed by a workshop led by Fr Jimmy on the encyclical of Pope Francis 'The Joy of the Gospel', encouraging all of us to look for joy in life. A natural follow on from this was a specific group exercise to explicitly look for where you might find joy in school life. The exercise was met with much enthusiasm as we created our collages to reveal our school of joy. Happy teachers make happy students we all agreed.

Then across the fields and through wire and hedges, Fr Martin led the liturgy for our open air Mass in the ruins of St Mary's church. A beautiful experience surrounded by the magnificent scenery of Glendalough and the landmark Round tower. On Sunday we all returned to our lives, having found joy in this place, left richer and refreshed after a very pleasant weekend in good company.

Le samedi matin 10 octobre un groupe de 13 maristes s'est rendu à Glendalough dans le comté de Wicklow pour une journée de réflexion. Neuf enseignants venus des trois établissements scolaires maristes - Chanel College à Coolock, CUS à Dublin, et St Mary's College à Dundalk - ont été accueillis par Kevin Jennings, directeur de la MEA, et par trois pères maristes, Jimmy McElroy sm, Martin McAnaney sm, les deux animateurs de la journée, et le père John O'Gara sm. Le thème de la journée était la route d'Emmaüs. Nous avons écouté l'évangile lu par le père John, ce qui nous a permis de nous concentrer sur la route qui nous attendait.

Kevin, qui connaît bien les chemins et le terrain de Glendalough, nous a servi de guide. La route d'Emmaüs était une expérience unique, et notre marche en était une aussi. Nous avons formé de petits groupes et nous avons écouté et partagé nos idées en marchant par cette belle matinée. Nous avons raconté des histoires pour raccourcir la marche. Nous nous sommes rappelé l'évangile que nous avions écouté : '...ils conversaient entre eux de tout ce qui était arrivé. Et il advint, comme ils conversaient et discutaient ensemble, que Jésus en personne s'approcha, et il faisait route avec eux; mais leurs yeux étaient empêchés de le reconnaître.' Il était agréable de méditer sur cela pendant que nous étions entourés de la beauté de la création et en si bonne compagnie.

Nous avons tous apprécié notre pique-nique, qui a été suivi par un atelier animé par le père Jimmy sur l'encyclique du pape François 'La Joie de l'Évangile', encyclique qui nous encourage tous à trouver la joie dans la vie. Ensuite nous avons travaillé en petits groupes pour considérer où exactement on peut trouver la joie dans la vie de nos écoles. Tout le monde a participé à cet exercice avec un grand entousiasme et nous avons créé des collages pour révèler notre 'école de joie'. Nous étions tous d'accord: Les enseignants heureux rendent les élèves heureux.

Puis nous avons traversé des champs et des buissons pour arriver aux ruines de l'église St Mary's où le père Martin a présidé notre messe en plein air. Une belle expérience - nous étions entourés de la beauté de Glendalough et à l'ombre de la célèbre Tour Ronde. L'ambiance du dîner était excellente, comme nous méditions sur la journée. Le dimanche nous sommes rentrés chez nous après avoir trouvé une grande joie dans ce lieu privilégié. Nous sommes rentrés enrichis et rafraîchis après un beau weekend en bonne compagnie.
