Les mercredi 12 et jeudi 13 octobre, des équipes de 10 lycées maristes d'Europe se sont retrouvées pour disputer la Thorpe Cup. Le tournoi a eu lieu à Ste Marie Lyon LA VERPILLIERE.

On Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 October teams from 10 Marist High Schools in Europe came together to compete for the Thorpe Cup. The tournament took place in Ste Marie Lyon LA VERPILLIERE. 

Mille mercis au directeur de La Verpillière Jean Baptiste Frondas et au directeur des sports David Venet sans qui ce tournoi n'aurait pas été possible. Leur offre d'accueillir le tournoi était des plus généreuses et les installations du lycée étaient  excellentes. Tous les participants ont été chaleureusement accueillis par la communauté scolaire. L'esprit mariste comme réalité vécue.

A thousand thanks to the director of La Verpillière Jean Baptiste Frondas and the director of sport David Venet without whom this tournament would not have been possible. Their offer to host the tournament was most generous and the facilities at the High School were excellent. All the participants were warmly welcomed by the school community. The Marist spirit as a lived reality.

Histoire de la THORPE CUP / History of the THORPE CUP

M. Thorpe était un homme d'affaires de Hull Angleterre, qui avait deux fils au lycée mariste de Hull. Lorsque le lycée mariste de Hull et le lycée mariste de Middlesbrough ont organisé une compétition de football, M. Thorpe a fourni la coupe. Les premiers matchs ont eu lieu en 1947.  Peu après, St Mary's Blackburn s'est impliqué.

Mr. Thorpe was a business man in Hull England, who had two sons in the Marist High School in Hull. When the Hull and Middlesbrough Marist schools organised a football competition, Mr Thorpe sponsored the cup. The first matches took place in 1947. Shortly afterwards St. Mary's Blackburn got involved.

Les écoles maristes de Middlesbrough et Hull ont été données au diocèse dans les années 1990. La coupe a ensuite été disputée par St Mary's Blackburn et Chanel College à Dublin.

La dernière compétition a eu lieu en 2016. Chanel a gagné.

The Marist schools in Middlesbrough and Hull were transferred to diocesan management in the 1990's. The cup was then competed for by St Mary's Blackburn and Chanel College Dublin.

The last competition was in 2016. Chanel were the winners.

Le 1er soir, tous les participants se sont rendus à La Neyliere pour passer un peu de temps dans cette merveilleuse maison patrimoniale des Pères Maristes et le lieu de repos du fondateur Jean Claude Colin.

Nous avons terminé la soirée par un jeu de table avec des équipes mixtes des écoles. Ce fut une affaire animée.

On the 1st night all of the participants travelled to La Neyliere to spend some time in this wonderful heritage house of the Marist Fathers and the resting place of the founder Jean Claude Colin.

We finished the evening with a table quiz with mixed teams from the schools. It was a lively affair.

Le capitaine de l'équipe Chanel Scott Ryan, et Philip Ardiff de Chanel ont remis la coupe avant la compétition aux hôtes du tournoi, Jules Breuraert le capitaine de La Verpillière, et David Venet de La Verpillière.

En raison de changements démographiques, St Mary's Blackburn a fermé définitivement ses portes en juin 2022. 

La coupe a donc été reconvertie en un tournoi de football à cinq pour le réseau de lycées maristes en Europe. La première compétition avec 10 Lycées participants a eu lieu à Ste Marie Lyon La Verpillière en octobre 2022.

La Verpillière a été le vainqueur. 

Le prochain tournoi aura lieu en 2024.

For demographic reasons, St Mary's Blackburn closed its doors in June 2022. The Cup has now been repurposed for a five a side football tournament for the network of Marist high schools in Europe.

The first competition with 10 High Schools participating took place in Ste Marie Lyon La Verpillière in October 2022

La Verpilliere were the winners.

The next tournament will take place in 2024.

Le football était rapide et furieux. 10 minutes dans chaque sens. Les matchs étaient très intenses et très compétitifs.

The football was fast and furious. 10 minutes each way. The matches were very intense and highly competative.

Malgré la compétition intense, la camaraderie était très évidente.

Despite the intense competition, the camaraderie was very evident.

Le tournoi s’est déroulé dans un très bon esprit et de nombreux joueurs ont été primés. Les demi-finales ont opposé SML Lyon – SM La Verp  et Meyzieu contre CUS. En finale , l’équipe de La Verpillière remporte le trophée après prolongation ( 3-2), une victoire sur le fil et un match très équilibré. On peut souligner le très bon état d’esprit des deux équipes qui jouaient devant plus de 300 élèves.

The tournament took place in a very good atmosphere and many players were awarded prizes. The semi-finals were played between SML St Paul and SML  La Verp, and SML Meyzieu against CUS Dublin. In the final, the team from La Verpillière won the trophy after extra time (3-2), a victory on the wire and a very balanced match. The good humour and team spirit was evident in both teams, who played in front of more than 300 students.
